Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Interview of Novinite.com and Novinite.bg with Tatyana Doncheva, former Bulgarian Socialist Party lawmaker, on the prospect of early parliamentary elections.
Mrs. Doncheva, how would you comment on DPS’s claims that there should be elections by the end of the year, stated by their leader Lyutvi Mestan on Thursday?
They are playing a game of chess. I have said even before the European elections that there is a process of rapprochement between GERB and DPS. What I cannot grasp however, is their desire to have elections this autumn. Does this mean they do not want the budget passed? This is not a nationally responsible plan.
So when do you think would be an appropriate time for elections?
One option would be as soon as possible – if BSP is willing to give up power. This way, the new government would have time to form its own budget. The other option is to let this cabinet work until the end of the year, to pass the budget. This would mean elections sometime in March next year.
Do you think there is a conflict between Sergey Stanishev and Lyutvi Mestan?
No, not at all. DPS simply seeks to leave BSP in a position of “seduced and abandoned”. In general in politics, you cannot talk about conflicts. Both parties have their interests and they play for them.
Would Mestan’s statement directly affect Stanishev’s future in BSP?
No, Stanishev’s future is firmly rooted. The word “ostavka” (resignation) stems from the word “ostava” (to remain). He will outlast Todor Zhivkov (Bulgaria’s Communist dictator) as party chairman.
To remove Stanishev, there need to be brave and strong people. At the moment, there are only chickens remaining, who would not dare to try. Stanishev will dictate the situation regardless of the party’s election results.
Do you see potential changes in the BSP’s Executive Committee?
No, this is mimicry. Nobody knows who is in the Executive Committee. It has been anonymous for a very long time. In this respect, whatever apparent changes are made to regain trust, will only serve to strengthen Stanishev’s habitual blame on others who are responsible for his failures.
