If the government is unable to fulfill goals of national interest, it should embark on a "zero" scenario - elections as soon as possible, a top ruling party cadre said.

Yanaki Stoilov, the Deputy Chair of socialists' group in Parliament, told the Bulgarian National Radio that extending the term of the cabinet was not an end in itself.

He said its fate will depend on whether the National Council of the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) next week could consider it possible to correct the mistakes and the lack of national recognition from its year in power.

Stoilov, who described the "zero scenario" as a matter of "the weeks to come", was referring to an earlier statement by the coalition partner Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS)'s Chairman Lyutvi Mestan.

The leader called for early elections in November or December 2014, explaining that an analysis of the European election results "make a full term in office of the Cabinet of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski impossible."

He also outlined three scenarios which could ensure a transition to political stability, namely elections in October 2015 (2 in 1 with those for President), a vote in June 2014, or polls as early as this year, with the DPS preferring the third option.

Mestan argued the government should resign "by October at the latest".
