Bulgaria: Bulgaria Should Not Build South Stream despite EU Stance – DPS Party Lyutvi Mestan, leader of liberal party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), photo by BGNES

Bulgaria should not build the South Stream gas pipeline in disregard of the EU stance on the matter, according to the leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party.

Speaking Thursday at an extraordinary press conference in Parliament, Lyutvi Mestan said that he had been alarmed by the announcement of the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) that the South Stream gas pipeline would be implemented despite Brussels' stance on it.

Mestan, as cited by dnevnik.bg, noted that DPS was consistent in its Euro-Atlantic orientation and demanded that the position of the EU on the gas pipeline project was not to be disregarded and the conduit had to be built in constant cooperation with the EU.

The leader of DPS said that Bulgaria had to uphold its interests in dialogue with the European partners and expressed explicit support for the pro-EU orientation of Bulgaria, adding that there was no other path for the country.

MPs of the Bulgarian Socialist Party have stated that Bulgaria press on with the South Stream gas pipeline despite the infringement procedure launched by the European Commission against Bulgaria on Monday over disregarding EU requirements for the implementation of the project.

During its press conference on Thursday, Mestan also announced that co-ruling party DPS was in favor of early elections by end-2014, stressing that it was impossible for the current socialist-led government to complete its term in office.
