Defense Ministers from NATO countries are to meet in Brussels to work on a response to Russia's actions regarding the Ukraine crisis.

The alliance is to analyze the long-term security implications of Russia's actions and could draft measures to be put forward at September's NATO leaders summit in the UK.

"Fundamental decisions" regarding Russia are to be taken at the meeting according to a senior NATO official quote by the BBC.

Preparation for the UK meeting itself will also be on the agenda.

NATO and Russia held talks this week despite tensions which have been heightening since the Maidan events and latest developments in Ukraine.

A NATO-Russia Council meeting was held Monday at an ambassadorial level, but participants made no breakthrough on any subject.

Alexander Grushko, Russia's Ambassador to NATO, even threatened that Moscow might withdraw from the Founding Act, the treaty setting a framework for cooperation under the Council.

He explained his country might be forced to do that by NATO's intentions to bolster defense at its eastern flank and added such developments "could cast Europe back to the days of the Cold War and launch an arms race."
