Sofia City Court will hold a first hearing in the case against ex-interior minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov and three former heads of the surveillance agency for illegal wiretapping.

The four are accused of failing to control the legal application of special surveillance devices.

On Thursday Tsvetanov was found guilty on the accusation that he stopped the surveillance requests in an investigation against the former head of the Interior's Chief Directorate Combating Organized Crime (GBDOP) in Veliko Tarnovo. The Sofia City Court sentenced Tsvetanov to four years in prison and banned him from holding senior state positions for five years.

Tsvetanov's lawyers said they will appeal the verdict.

On Monday, Sofia City Court acquitted Tsvetanov in a trial for large-scale embezzlment of BGN 50 000 from the budget of the Interior Ministry. The sum was allegedly embezzled to the benefit of the aforementioned Orlin Todorov.
