Over 60 Exhibitions Scheduled in Bulgaria’s Month of Photography
The 5th edition of the "Month of Photography" will showcase over 60 exhibitions across Bulgaria throughout June, and the first half of July.
The event is organized by the Bulgarian Academy of Photography "Yanka Kyurkchieva" (APB), as well as with the partnership of the Italian, Hungarian, and Polish Cultural Institutes.
"This is not only the 5th anniversary of the Month of Photography, but also the 15th anniversary of the Bulgarian Photography Academy "Yanka Kyurkchieva", so it is a special year. I am proud to say that the scope of the event keeps growing. Not only are we planning a record number of exhibitions, discussions and seminars, but we have also broadened our geographic reach. We have added a number of new cities, including 2 villages as well", Yavor Popov, chairman of the National Association "Photography Academy" said during a press briefing.
This year's Month of Photography will have 2 opening ceremonies – one on June 2 in Blagoevgrad and another on June 3 in Sofia.
The selection process of the exhibits was done in 3 tracks. The main one was the open call for submissions, which were reviewed by a jury of experts from the Photography Academy. The Polish, Italian and Hungarian Cultural Institutes assisted with providing works of some of their well-known photographers.
Another key partnership of APB is with FotoEvidence, a New York-based platform for documenting social injustice, founded by Bulgarian photographer Svetlana Bachevanova. With the assistance of FotoEvidence, 4 collections on social themes will be presented within the month.
"Our goal is to show as much as we can the variety of photography and the social impact it can have. We are glad that more and more young people are joining our initiatives and competitions", Emanuil Treyman, Chief Coordinator of the Month of Photography said.
One of the more peculiar exhibitions "SELFIEka" will present the modern "selfie" culture through the eyes of professional photographers. It will run between June 6–18 at the Expo Bath, Sofia.
A discussion on the influence of photography in social media will take place on June 7 at ZoomBox Center, Sofia.
