Bulgaria: Polish FM Sikorski Proposed as EU Foreign Policy Chief Polish Foreign Ministers Radoslaw Sikorski (L) and European Union High Representative for foreign affairs, British, Catherine Ashton (R), at the start of European foreign affairs ministers council at the EU headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, 17 March 2014

Poland has nominated its Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski to become the next EU foreign policy chief.

The country's Prime Minister Donald Tusk was quoted by the BBC as saying that Sikorski would be a "natural candidate".

In Tusk's view, "Poland has gained such influence in foregn policy" that the position would be within the scope" of its interests.

Catherine Ashton, which currently holds the office of High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (as the post is fully called), has announced she would not stand for a second term.

An official decision on the so-called "EU Foreign Minister" is due in July, when a vote will be held in the European Council (the leaders of all EU member states). Their choice, however, has to be approved by the European Parliament in September.

Poland played an active role in the EU's deescalation attempts in the Ukraine crisis this February. Alongside counterparts from Germany and France he brokered a peace deal with ousted President Viktor Yanukovych in Kiev.

His country, on the other hand, is a staunch supporter of assertive European measures aimed at reducing energy dependence from Russia and constraining what he describes as Moscow's aggressive foreign policy.
