Egyptians vote on the final day of the presidential elections on Tuesday, with former army chief Abdul Fattah al-Sisi favored to win.

Amid fears of low voter turnout, the government declared the day a national holiday. As of Monday noon, 12% of eligible voters had cast their ballots, Al-Jazeera reported.

Sisi was appointed military commander-in chief and Defense Minister in 2012 by Egypt's first freely elected president, Mohamed Morsi. In July 2013, he led the coup which ousted Morsi's Islamist government and initiated a violent crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood.

The only opponent of Sisi in these elections is left-wing candidate Hamdeen Sabahi. Other potential candidates have refrained from running, putting blame on the unsafe and undemocratic political climate in the country.
