Life expectancy of Bulgarian population calculated for the period 2011-2013 has increased by 0.5 years and has reached 74. 5 years.
Despite that, Bulgaria is one of the EU countries with a lowest life expectancy, the National Statistical Institute data showed. The only countries where the life expectancy is lower than in Bulgaria are Lithuania and Latvia - 71.1 years in both.
Highest life expectancy at birth is registered in Spain (82.5) and Italy (82.4). Different mortality rates among male and female, as well as among urban and rural population resulted in differences in life expectancy at birth for these population categories. Life expectancy at birth for male population is 71.0 years, while for female - it is 7 years higher - 78.0 years. In the ten years between 2003 and 2013, life expectancy at birth rose by 2.4 years for women and by 2.3 years for men. Life expectancy for urban population (75.3 years) is 2.7 years higher than for rural (72.6 years).
Compared to 2003, increase of 2.8 years is observed for urban population and of 1.6 years - for rural. Life expectancy at age 65 is 15.8 years. The respective values for men and women are 14.0 and 17.4 years.
In the ten years between 2003 and 2013, life expectancy at age 65 rose by 1.4 years - 1.1 for men and 1.7 years for women. In regional aspect, life expectancy at birth varies from 72. 3 years in district Vratsa to 76.0 years in district Sofia - capital. Life expectancy is higher than the country average in eight districts. Women live longer than men in all country districts, but the widest gap between the sexes is observed in the districts Sliven (7.9 years) and Kyustendil (7.7), and smallest in the district of Kardzhali – 5.7 years.
