The death toll from the South Korean Sewol ferry disaster has climbed to 242, according to local officials.

According to the South Korean coast guard, as cited by the CNN, 60 people are still missing.

The search-and-rescue operation is impeded by swift currents and high waves.

The ferry sank on April 16 off South Korea's southwestern island of Jindo on April 16, en route to the southern resort island of Jeju, with 476 people onboard, mostly secondary school students from Danwon High School.

A total of 174 people, including most of the ship's crew members, were rescued immediately, but no survivors have been found since then.

All 15 crewmembers, including the captain of the ferry, Lee Jun-Seok, have been in pre-trial custody since April 25.
