Internet emerged as a CIA project and this is also how it was developed, Russia's President Vladimir Putin reminded on Thursday.

At a media forum, he explained that everything which was said on the Internet was controlled through servers based in the US, Russia's Kommersant newspaper reports.

Putin also said he would take steps to reshuffle servers across Russian territory that store information of utmost importance for national security, such as data of the Defense Ministry, the defense industry, institutions, federal and government bodies.

He said that, although Russia's web platform Yandeks and social media Vkontakte had developed under Western influence, but asserted this would change.

On April 22, Vkontakte's chief Pavel Durov was freed of his duties and the social media passed in hands of the tycoon Alisher Osmanov, who is considered close to the Russian government.

The Internet was indeed first developed after a government-commissioned research in 1960s and used by the US military.

Russian President's announcement however comes amid Moscow's standoff with the West over the situation in Ukraine, in which both sides are said to be using the web as a propaganda tool.
