The construction of the Bulgarian part of the South Stream pipeline will start in May or June in Varna, said Igor Elkin, executive director of the company South Stream Bulgaria.
This transpired during a round table discussion “South Stream Project – What Will Bulgaria and Europe Gain”, organized by the chambers of commerce and industry of Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary in Varna on Wednesday.
The participants in the forum expressed the support of the business for the project and discussed the establishing of Bulgarian Energy Initiative, which will most likely lobby in Brussels in favour of the project.
Elkin said that in spite the EU misgivings for the project and the recent European Parliament resolution that it should be stopped, it is going according to plan. “Cooperation with the European Parliament and the EC continues,” he said. “I think that the political arguments should not prevail over the economic benefits.”
Meanwhile, Bulgaria's Minister of Economy and Energy Dragomir Stoinev will meet Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger in Brussels today to discuss South Stream.
The invitation for the meeting came earlier in April with a scathing letter regarding the threats against the EDCs in Bulgaria and the country's unconditional support for South Stream.
