Five people were killed in a shooting at a checkpoint in the Ukrainian town of Slaviansk, reports the Russian channel Rossiya 24.

Another was taken to hospital in serious condition.

Slaviansk is one of the east Ukrainian cities, occupied by pro-Russian separatists.

According to the reports, the shooting started when unidentified cars approached and opened fire on a checkpoint manned by local unarmed residents who are inspecting incoming traffic and watch for approaching Ukrainian army forces. Three of them were killed.

The self defence forces who arrived quickly returned the fire and killed two of the attackers.
According to the Russian channel, in the car were found insignia of the Ukrainian nationalist group Right Sector, explosives and weapons.
