Economy and Energy Minister Dragomir Stoynev has vowed that Bulgaria will fight for the implementation of the South Stream gas pipeline project.

Stoynev told journalists Thursday that Bulgaria would comply with the decisions of the European Commission but it would seek a financial mechanism for the countries which would be negatively affected by the move.

He suggested that the South Stream gas pipeline could be stopped in the case of a victory of the European People's Party (EPP) at the upcoming European Parliament elections, adding that it would cause Bulgaria to lose millions of investments, thousands of new jobs, and gas supply security.

Bulgaria's Economy and Energy Minister, as cited by the Focus news agency, described the South Stream gas pipeline as an investment project of strategic importance which was economically beneficial for the country and would create thousands of jobs in its poorest region.

Stoynev referred to the project as a major incentive to economic growth in 2014, stressing the fact that it was to create 5000 new jobs.

"Yet again, we are expected to fear, God forbid, a situation where some country is stricken by conflict, and we have our gas supplies cut, until the TAP pipeline project is built, and we start receiving additional gas volumes from the Shah Deniz 2 consortium" Stoynev added.
