A total of BGN 31.5 M will be invested in repairs of second-class and third-class roads in the following months, according to Bulgarian Regional Development Minister Desislava Terzieva.

She specified that a total of BGN 15.5 M would be provided from savings from winter road maintenance, while a total of BGN 16 M would be supplied by the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA).

Terzieva, as cited by the press office of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, explained that the money would be used to repair 230km of roads which had not been repaired for years and were in poor condition.

She said that these road repairs, which were to be implemented in stages, were part of the government's policy aimed at improving the condition of roads of the second and third class.

Terzieva informed that the repair works had started in some places.

Bulgaria's Regional Development Minister noted that the government sought to wrap up repairs of the busiest roads leading to Black Sea resorts and mountain resorts by mid-June, before the start of the active tourist season.

Terzieva went on to say that the rehabilitation and preventive maintenance of nearly 1500km of republican roads continued in the new construction season.

She pointed out that a total of around 150km of roads would be repaired using funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

She also informed that the rehabilitation of around 500km of roads under the Transit Roads V program continued in 2014.

Terzieva declared that the rehabilitation of around 50km of old sections of the Trakia highway at the exit of Sofia and near Plovdiv and Pazardzhik would start at the end of summer.

She added that repairs of another 220 km would also be launched.

Bulgaria's Regional Development Minister said that the implementation of a part of the projects under the government's Public Investment Program Growth and Sustainable Development of Regions had started, adding that the total of over BGN 50 M provided in 2014 would go to the completion of repairs of over 270km of second-class roads and third-class roads which were in an exceptionally poor condition.

She also noted that a total of BGN 44.5 M had been spent on winter road maintenance from November to end-March, adding that savings amounted to BGN 15.5 M.
