Ukraine's interim President Oleksandr Turchynov does not rule out the holding of a referendum on the state system.

At a session in Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada (Parliament), Turchynov, who is also the country's Parliament Speaker, asserted that he was not against a national poll on the issue, even tough he was sure that the majority of the population would support the integrity of a unitary Ukraine, Ukraine's UNIAN news agency quoted him as saying.

After the new leadership assumed power in Ukraine, the country's Crimean peninsula broke away, and the eastern parts of the country were gripped by unrest caused by pro-Russian groups who insist either on joining Russia or on a federal status.

A move toward federalization of the country is also what the Kremlin has suggested over the past weeks as a precondition to assist in finding a way out of the crisis.

The beginning of April saw violence re-flaring across Eastern Ukraine, with local administration in some key cities seized by rebels.

In Donetsk, they proclaimed earlier a "People's Republic." Ukraine has so far vowed to conduct an "anti-terrorist operation" against pro-Russian groups and has taken moves toward decentralization, but this is the first sign that a federal structure is also an option.
