US President Barack Obama has urged the European Union to be prepared for new sanctions against Russia.

In a phone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Obama "underscored the need for the United States, European Union, and other global partners to be prepared to meet further Russian escalation with additional sanctions", the White House revealed.

President Obama and Chancellor Merkel reportedly expressed concern over the latest events in Dontesk and Luhansk, where pro-Russian activists have seized government buildings. They believe these acts are carried out with the explicit support of Moscow.

Once again the two leaders shared their disappointment at Russia's reluctance to pull its troops out of the sovereign territory of Ukraine.
