The EU accession of Bulgaria and Romania in 2007 was a right decision, said EC President Jose Barroso in an interview for Berliner Zeitung.

According to him, the alternative would have been to be no man's land or under Russian pressure.

“I realize that there are many things that are not right in the two countries,” he said. “This is why we keep a very close watch on the situation there within the cooperation and observation framework.”

“What was the alternative,” Barroso commented. "To leave Bulgaria and Romania in the no man's land? To become unstable like other countries outside the EU? Imagine that Bulgaria and Romania were not EU members today. Most likely they would have been under severe pressure from Moscow.”
