Eight people were killed on Sunday in clashes between supporters of rival candidates in Turkey's local elections.

Six people were killed in a gunfight between two families in the village of Yuvacik in the eastern province of Sanliurfa, which borders Syria, security officials said, according to Hurriyet Daily News.

In the Siverek district of the same province, there was a brawl which left several people injured.

Two other people died in a gunfight between relatives of two candidates in Golbasi village in the Hatay province.

Over 50 million eligible voters can go to the polls in Turkey's local elections on Sunday.

A total of 26 parties compete for political representation, according to Today's Zaman.

Turkey's local elections, which come at a time of damaging security leaks and allegations of government corruption and bribery, are widely seen as a test for the political future of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling party AKP.
