Bulgaria: Governments Demanded of Google Information On 42 000 Accounts File photo

The number of government demands for personal data in Google accounts has risen by 120% in the last four years.

In the second half of 2013 governments across the world made 27 000 requests for 42 000 accounts, according to the Google Transparency Report, which the company releases each six months since 2009.

According to Google, this is only the information on specific accounts, connected to criminal investigations, and does not include the data the US National Security Agency (NSA) collects on internet users.

For the first time Google includes in the report countries who made less than 30 requests. Among them is Bulgaria, whose government made a request for the first time since the report is published. According to Google, Bulgarian authorities asked for data on three accounts, but the company refused to divulge the information.

Leader in the number of requests is the USA with 10 574 requests for 18 254 accounts. In 83% of the cases Google provided at least some information.

Second is India, which asked for information on 4401 accounts. In 66% of the cases the requests were granted. Third is France, whose authorities showed interest in 3378 accounts, with 51% success rate.
