Field Marshal Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has resigned as Egypt's military chief, as he intends to run for presidency.

Sisi appeared on state TV, saying that he was wearing a military uniform for the last time, the BBC reported.

The 59-year-old former army chief is the most likely winner of Egypt's upcoming elections as there are no significant rivals for the office.

The Egyptian government has yet to set a date for the presidential vote, but it is expected to have been held bu July 17.

A year later, Sisi was perceived to be one of the leaders of the army's intervention which removed Morsi from the presidency following mass protests over lack of reforms in the country.

Sisi, as well as military circles in general, have their critics among Islamist supporters and especially among members and affiliates of the Muslim Brotherhood, a movement on which a crackdown is being carried out by the government.

Earlier this week, 528 Islamists were sentenced to death over their participation in unrest in South Egypt last summer. OVer 700 more are awaiting trial, which was due to be held on Tuesday but was adjourned until April.
