Bulgaria: Liberalization of Bulgaria's Electricity Market Will Increase Prices File photo

The 2015 liberalization of Bulgaria's electricity market will increase the prices by 30-40%, if energy efficiency is not improved, warn experts.

At a discussion on the problems of the energy sector, the experts recommended that government takes measures to encourage small-scale production for own use of factories and residential buildings and avoid mega-projects and centralized energy production.

“The current electricity price for households is below its production value and the difference is subsidized by the business consumers,” said Valentin Kolev of the Bulgarian Energy Federation, part of one of Bulgaria's major trade unions. “Whenever the price regulation ends, there will be no-one to cover the difference and the prices for household consumers will increase.”

Andrei Bachvarov of the Energy Efficiency Association warned that the prices will increase drastically, unless measures for energy efficiency are taken.
