Bulgaria: Power Distributor EVN Orders Green Energy Restrictions Photo by EPA/BGNES

EVN has requested that renewable energy plants connected to its power grid in Bulgaria dwindle production capacities by 60%.

The decision will be in force on Wednesday. It is unknown whether it is related to a dispute between the state electricity company and power distributors in Bulgaria.

The power distributor operating in South-Eastern Bulgaria has taken the move after demands by the state Energy System Operator (ESO), Expert.bg has reported.

ESO has the authority to announce the measure, which comes amidst a dispute between power distributors and the state National Electricity Company (NEK).

EVN also declared that if renewable energy plants do not keep up to the instructions by ESO, it might disconnect them from its grid.

On Wednesday, Bulgaria's State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation is to decide on a procedure for the termination of the licenses of the three power distributors.

The 3-day deadline set by Economy and Energy Minister Dragomir Stoynev expired and the independent energy watchdog for the payment of BGN 318 to the National Electric Company (NEK) by power distributors CEZ, EVN, and Energo-Pro expired on Tuesday.

Power distributors, on their behalf, refute claims that they owe anything to NEK, insisting they are at a loss by renewable energy producers, who do not have to pay taxes to them according to the new legal framework.
