The trial against Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) leader and former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, in the "lost files" case begins on Tuesday.

The legal investigation against Stanishev stemmed from the case where he was charged with losing 7 classified documents containing information constituting a state secret, while in office as Prime Minister (2005-2009).

In mid-November 2011, the Sofia City Court opened the administrative case against the Socialist leader. The indictment was submitted to the court more than a year after Stanishev was officially charged amid lots of media fuss.

Under article 78a of the Penal Code, Stanishev can only face a fine of BGN 500 – 5,000 if he is found guilty.

The first court session will be on Tuesday March 18 at 1:30 pm.
