Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) dismissed on disciplinary grounds VSS member and former Deputy Chief Prosecutor Kamen Sitnilski.
Following a two-hour debate during the Thursday sitting of VSS, Sitnilski's dismissal was backed by 16 VSS members, with five votes against and three abstensions, according to reports of mediapool.bg.
The move was considered scandalous by legal experts, taking into account the requirement listed in Bulgaria's Judiciary Act that the pre-term dismissal of a VSS member be backed by over 2/3 of the VSS members, or 17 votes.
VSS representative Sonya Naydenova explained Thursday that VSS had decided that Sitnilski could be dismissed as an ordinary magistrate, adding that the motion required the support of 13 VSS members.
Sitnilski was adamant that he would appeal the decision before the Supreme Administrative Court (VAS), stressing that the decision was illegal.
Former Deputy Chief Prosecutor Kamen Sitnilski was suspended from the post of VSS member for six months on July 26, 2013.
VSS then opened the proceedings on the proposal of the VSS Ethics Committee over leaks of wiretapped conversations between Sitnilski, Rumen Boev, a VSS member, and other magistrates during which they agreed how they would vote at the delegate assembly convened in the autumn of 2012 to elect VSS members from the prosecutors' quota.
