The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's Parliament has the highest share of female MPs among all Balkan countries.

The World Bank reveals that 34.1% of the country's MPs are women, while Serbia comes second in the region, with 33.2%.

In Bulgaria, 24.6% of Parliament is made up of women, in Croatia 23.8%, and in Bosnia-Herzegovina 21.4%. The lowest percentage is in Romania, 13.3%.

Kosovo's Deputy PM Edita Tahiri, noted that despite the progress made, more needs to be done to create an equal society.

"Our efforts have delivered results, but we have a long road in front of us in order to build the kind of democracy that grants equal access in decision-making to both genders", she said, quoted by BalkanInsight.

Most Balkan countries have enacted legislation based on EU principles of gender equality, however not all are implementing them.
