The Bulgarian Parliament adopted on Wednesday a declaration on national unity, introduced by the Parliament Speaker Mihail Mikov.

The document, written in response to the surge of tension on an ethnic, religious and political basis, calls on Bulgarian citizens and political leaders not to allow any use of the Day of national hero Vasil Levski for partisan or other purposes.

The newly-adopted declaration also urges "high responsibility of all political powers and mostly of parliamentary groups, which should avoid that their representatives foment tension, hatred and blows to national unity and to the interests of Bulgarian citizens by using unacceptable and provocative statements."

113 MPs voted in favour of the declaration. Only three were against the draft, all of them from ultranationalist Ataka's parliamentary group.

The content of this document was among the reasons for Monday's abrupt end of parliamentary voting procedures, as MPs of Ataka left the session, outraged that their draft version had not been accepted by the majority. This led to a halt in the discussions on the draft Election Code.
