Placing Bulgaria under a new monitoring mechanism over the refugee situation would be unfounded, according to Nikolay Chirpanliev, Chair of the State Agency for Refugees.

In a Sunday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), Chirpanliev presented his stance on the warning of Cecilia Malmstrom, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, that Bulgaria could be the first case of enacting the early warning management mechanism under the Dublin-2 regulation on the rights of asylum seekers on the territory of the country of the first entry into the EU.

"Even if we are placed under a new monitoring mechanism, the ones who back the measure will make sure that there are absolutely no reasons for doing this. The fact that Bulgaria is the smallest EU country and, so to say, the most vulnerable one, does not mean that it must be used for other purposes," he declared.

Bulgarian MEP Ivaylo Kalfin, however, argued that Bulgaria ran the risk of being placed under the early warning mechanism.

Kalfin insisted that Bulgaria had to do everything possible to avoid it because it would signal that Bulgaria was failing to manage its borders and the issue of Schengen accession would be dropped from the agenda.
