Google has placed a rainbow version of its logo on its search page, apparently criticizing Russian authorities for the country’s notorious anti-gay law.
The doodle, which is also featured on Google’s .ru Russia address, features a series of winter athletes set in rainbow colors, with a pointed quote from the Olympic Charter below Google’s search bar. Clicking the doodle itself also points users to the Olympic Charter.
“The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play,” the quote says.
The ban on what Russian authorities perceive as “gay propaganda to minors” has sparked international outrage as gay activists have been fined across the country since the law's implementation in 2013.
The 2014 Winter Olympics will officially open in Russia’s Sochi on Friday, with organizers hoping the ceremony will get the criticism-beleaguered event off to a flying start.
