Bulgaria's Parliament will discuss whether to restart the construction of the Belene nuclear power plant.

The proposal was motioned by the nationalist party Ataka, which uses the parliamentary procedure allowing opposition parties to initiate debates, without a mandatory voting.

Ataka is proposing the cancellation of the 2012 decision of Parliament to stop the construction of the power plant.

The construction of Belene was one of the election promises of the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

The project was terminated by the previous government, after the referendum of January 2013, initiated by BSP, failed to accumulate the necessary number of voters.

Instead, the government at the time decided to start a project for the   expansion of the existing Kozloduy nuclear power plant.
