Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin admitted he never had any illusions that the European Commission’s monitoring report on Bulgaria would be positive.
“I am not surprised, since the expectations were not high. We are well aware of what the problems are, and the report is objective. There hasn’t been enough work done since July 2012”, said Vigenin in Thursday’s morning bloc of NovaTV.
On Wednesday, the EC presented its latest monitoring reports on Bulgaria and Romania, under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM).
The report assesses Bulgaria’s progress in regards to fighting corruption and organized crime as “insufficient”. It also discusses the unacceptable level of political influence on the judicial system.
“There has been little consensus among parties regarding the reforms in past years, which clearly shows in the report”, the Foreign Minister added.
Vigenin pointed out that the report covers the span of 3 Bulgarian governments (including the caretaker one), which means that some of the problems may be institutionally rooted.
