Serbia is beginning its EU accession negotiations on Tuesday, in a process which is likely to be strenuous and lengthy, but also key for the country's future.

The official ceremony for the start of the discussions is being held in Brussels. It is attended by the Serbian PM Ivica Dacic, Deputy PM Aleksandar Vucic, EU Integration Minister Branko Ruzic, and Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic.

The EU is represented by EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele, and the Greek FM Evangelos Venizelos, reports Tanjug agency.

The EU will present Belgrade officials with documents of the negotiating framework. The concerned sides will also arrange the schedule for their future meetings.

Prime Minister Dacic will deliver the introductory statement of the Serbian government.

The conference is also attended by Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz, his Croatian counterpart Vesna Pusic, and other officials.

The most difficult issue in Serbia's EU negotiations will be its relations with neighboring Kosovo. Kosovo declared independence in 2008, but Serbia is yet to recognize its former province as a separate state.
