The explosions that went off in Dagestan's capital Makhachkala are not terrorist attacks, according to the Interior Ministry of the Russian republic.

According to sources from the ministry quoted by RIA Novosti, the bombings are cases of revenge among criminals, rather than terror acts.

Later reports by the Dagestani police said that four high-profile members of organized crime groups have been killed in a special operation launched by law enforcement units.

At least five people were injured Friday, as explosions from a grenade-launcher and then a car bomb rocked a restaurant in Makhachkala.

Concerns about security in Russia have been heightened ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi next month.

At the end of December, twin bombings on public transit killed more than 30 people in the southern city of Volgograd.

Sochi, Volgograd and Makhachkala are all in or near Russia's restive Caucasus region.
