Bulgaria’s ruling Socialist Party has said it is “disappointed” by MEP Ivaylo Kalfin’s decision to resign as head of of the Bulgarian delegation in EP’s S&D group.
Kalfin stepped down on Monday, explaining in a letter to Bulgarian Socialist Party leader and PES president Sergey Stanishev that he had been forced to make “an absurd decision” between his ideas and BSP’s governing body.
The MEP thus strongly reinforced rumors that he would head the EU election ticket of former President Georgi Parvanov’s left-wing project, ABV.
Key Bulgarian MP Maya Manolova strongly criticized Kalfin’s move, reminding that BSP has endorsed him in a number of election campaigns over the years.
“Many people have worked for him in these campaigns and I believe this is a betrayal against him,” Manolova told reporters.
She further stated that the establishment of any alternative left-wing formations would be “a blow for BSP.”
