Former Bulgarian Economy and Energy Minister Delyan Dobrev sees the power price cuts as a way for the government to buy itself time in the current political crisis.

“Unfortunately the effect of these measures will be felt sooner or later by all users, who will have to pay out the interest rates on the accumulated bills”, said Dobrev for Focus.

The State Commission for Energy and Water Reglation (DKEVR) plans to cut the rates of household night-time electricity prices with 10% and the day-time rate by 1%. The suggested day price reduction for SMEs is 1.5%.

The electric companies stand against the proposed price cuts.

Dobrev added that such a move would make sense only if there is a decrease of expenses in the electricity sector, however the case is exactly the opposite at the moment.

Ironically, Dobrev was a minister in the center-right GERB cabinet, which was ousted in February following a series of protests against the soaring utility bills in the country.
