"What happened between us on stage was like a dance of death," says Oktay Enimehmedov, the young Bulgarian Turk accused of attempted murder of the Honorary Chairman of DPS Ahmed Dogan.

On January 19, 2013, police in Bulgaria's capital Sofia detained 25-year-old Oktay Enimehmedov after he pointed a gun at Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party founder Ahmed Dogan as he was delivering his resignation speech at a party conference. No shots were fired.

"Society is very heterogeneous, part of it understood me; the other - no. I can say that I fulfilled my civic duty," said Enimehmedov in a Sunday interview for Nova TV. He labeled the failure of Dogan to appear in Court "a huge act of arrogance."

"If Dogan's favorite bird is the falcon (Dogan in Turkish means falcon - editor's note); mine is the eagle - both are predatory birds, but the eagle symbolizes freedom. There was a possibility for me to be killed for what I did, right there, on the sport," stressed Enimehmedov, who was beaten severely almost immediately after the attack by senior DPS activists. They put him down and nearly lynched him.

In the Sunday interview, he further said that DPS, along with their current ruling partner, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, have played with the fates of Bulgarian people for 20 years and it was now time for them to assume political responsibility.

"The current government it supported in full by two political parties. They made the first step and kissed each other. But this is not enough. It is high time for them to say the truth; the entire truth about the Transition Period after the fall of Communism. They should merge into one political formation and run on the same ballot," Enimehmedov reasoned.

He explained that DPS was guilty of instigating unfounded fears among Bulgarian ethnic Turks in order to manipulate them and control their vote.

He firmly rejected speculations that the attack was contracted for political reasons.

"The person who ordered this attack is inside me; these are my patriotic motives. But their small brains cannot accept that a 25-year-old man can undertake something of the sort. They are with Dogan not for political ideals, but because there are driven by profiteering interests," concluded Enimehmedov.

Immediately after the arrest, the young ethnic Turk stated that he did not actually want to kill Dogan, but to scare him. The gun was established to have been a gas pistol.

It was initially believed that he would only face grave hooliganism charges. However, experts told the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office that gas pistol shots can cause death if fired at a range closer than one centimeter from the temple, mouth or eyes.

Enimehmedov was therefore indicted on attempted murder charges. He was also charged with "indecent actions that are grossly violating the public order and showing clear lack of respect for society."

Dogan has not been seen in public since the January 19 incident.

At the end of November, the former politician was removed as witness in the trial against Enimehmedov because of his ailing health.

According to local media, Dogan is suffering from severe depression as a result of the incident.
