A six-kilometer long line has formed Saturday at the checkpoint on the Bulgarian side of the Bulgarian-Turkish border.

Clogging and lines are a frequent occurrence at the Kapitan Andreevo – Kapukule checkpoint due to slow Customs work and/or repairs, but this time they are attributed to intense traffic ahead of a week of winter holidays and poor weather conditions such as fog and ice patches.

As Saturday is the last workday of the year for many Bulgarians, the Interior Ministry warns of increased likelihood of very heavy traffic and congestions across the country.

Over 300 000 automobiles are expected to be leaving the capital Sofia only over the weekend.

Traffic police are advising all drivers to obey speed limits and use extreme caution. Traffic patrols all over Bulgaria will be beefed with additional officers on duty.

The Road Infrastructure Agency is imposing restrictions for tractor trailers, which are banned Saturday from 4 pm to 10 pm from using the main road between the second largest city of Plovdiv and Kapitan Andreevo.

Roads are mostly dry, while the wet, snowy, and icy spots have been and are being treated.
