Bulgaria: Bulgaria's Formerly Ruling GERB 'to See More Mavericks'

Bulgarian independent MP Svetlin Tanchev expects more people to join the ranks of mavericks, leaving the formerly-ruling GERB after the party congress in February.

"The congress will reveal the party leadership changes, which may result in the resignation of more party members," Tanchev commented in an interview for Trud daily.

The leader of the centrist Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) Boyko Borisov discussed planned changes in the party after Tanchev and his colleague Georgi Markov deposited their resignations.

Borisov stated that he wanted to shift the focus from the party leader to the Executive Committee in order to demonstrate the intellectual potential of GERB.

Svetlin Tanchev left GERB on his own earlier in December. This came days after GERB MP Georgi Markov deposited his resignation from the same parliamentary group.

According to Tanchev, it made sense to talk about two power centers in GERB – revolving around the former PM Borisov and the deputy PM Tsvetan Tsvetanov. Tanchev said the competition inside the party was normal, especially when the elections and the party congress were approaching.

Hereinafter Tanchev will keep balance and defend right-wing concepts. However, he expressed his support for the anti-government protests, because the cabinet could not function in this environment, and the political risk strongly affected the financial and economic processes.

Tanchev claimed that GERB did not have a dialogue with the other right-wing formations and was not open to change. This led to the 'absurd situation' of GERB supporting nationalist party Ataka for the moratorium on the right to sell land to foreigners from the EU, although such ban contradicts the commitments of Bulgaria to the EU.
