Bulgaria: Ex MP of Bulgaria's GERB Vows Independence, Not to Join Socialists Georgi Markov, former MP of center-right party GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), photo by vesti.bg

Georgi Markov, who left center-right party GERB last week to become an independent MP, refuted accusations that he had been talked into the step by the Bulgarian Socialist Party.

In a Sunday interview for Nova TV, he insisted that he had not been wooed by BSP, adding that he could not be a member of the socialist party because his father and grandfather had had their property confiscated by the communist regime.

"I like left-wing views but I do not like the people who preach them. There are many millionaires there, and, having millionaires talk about social policy, I do not see how these things go together," he declared.

Asked whether he would back the ruling coalition, taking into account that BSP and liberal party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) had 121 MPs and his vote could prove decisive, he said that he would not be a "diaper" for anybody, adding that BSP and DPS were unlikely to depend on him because they had their agreements.

Markov said that he would back a no-confidence motion against the government in case GERB and nationalist party Ataka agreed on the matter, which he referred to as "almost impossible."
