Two female Bulgarian college students are reported to have been arrested after tensions heated up in front of Parliament Thursday afternoon.
According to reports, the two were detained after throwing red paint at police officers.
Thursday students came out to protest against a draft new Law on the Ministry of Interior, which they say will significantly curtail citizens' rights and expand the powers of the police.
But the rally is part of a broader protest movement asking for the resignation of PM Plamen Oresharski, the dissolution of Parliament, and new elections.
Thursday students were joined by renewable energy producers, who are continuing their protest against a new 20% fee over renewable energy just passed by the Bulgarian Parliament.
Tensions ran high when some participants in the rally tried to pull away metal fences placed by the police, and threw tomatoes and lit papers at the parliament building.
Police have started to try to push protesters away from the fence and to clear the Tsar Osvoboditel Square.
