The Chief Secretary of Bulgaria's State Agency for National Security (DANS), Mladen Georgiev, has asked to be released from the post.

He has cited personal reasons. DANS is yet to announce his successor.

Mladen Georgiev was appointed at the post during the term of the previous government of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov. In February 2013, he was involved in a scandal linked to Borisov.

In February, the site for investigative journalism Bivol.bg published leaked files revealing that in 1996, the ex PM has been listed as informant for the then anti-mafia police unit – the Central Service for Combatting Organized Crime (CSBOP).

It emerged then that Georgiev has been the recruiting officer.

The grounds for Borisov's recruitment were the latter's contacts with "operatively interesting individuals." Borisov's case from the 90s has been codenamed "Buddha" and it made huge headlines in Bulgaria. His government resigned just weeks after the publications, amidst mass protests.

Georgiev, himself, has been dismissed from the Interior Ministry in 1997 over links to organized crime. After that, he became member of the senior management of Borisov's former private security firm, IPON.
