Ukraine should not turn into a "battlefield" of EU and Russian interests, stated Ukrainian PM Mykola Azarov.

The country has been gripped by large scale anti-government protests since Azarov announced his cabinet's decision to freeze signing an Association Agreement with the EU.

The deal was to be signed at a meeting this Thursday and Friday in Vilnius.

"Russia does not give us guarantees, Europe does not give us guarantees, so what are we, a battlefield?" PM Azarov told foreign journalists Tuesda, as quoted by the BBC.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry issued a position stating that the delay in signing the Association Agreement does not imply stopping Ukraine's European integration.

PM Azarov stated that he hopes that negotiations - including Russia - will continue as early as December.
