Bulgarian Nationalists Use Refugees as Trumpcard against Cabinet

The Bulgarian cabinet must severely limit the inflow of refugees into the country or else will fall, stated nationalist party Ataka leader Volen Siderov.

Siderov spoke Sunday at a rally against the relocation of refugees, many of them coming from Syria, in southern Bulgarian city of Sliven.

"If this cabinet does not respect our demands regarding refugees, it will painfully from power. Because our demands are people's demands," stated the nationalist leader.

He reiterated Ataka's position, which includes the expulsion of all individuals who have illegally entered Bulgaria, and a closing down of the border with Turkey.

He also reiterated Ataka's request for a "re-calling" of Bulgaria's EU commissioner, who is in charge with humanitarian aid, Kristalina Georgieva.

According to Siderov, Bulgaria's and the EU's inadequate handling of the refugee crisis creates tensions within host countries.

The embattled cabinet of Bulgarian PM Plamen Oresharski is backed by a center-left coalition that has 120 MPs out of 240, and has to rely on the tacit additional support of nationalists Ataka.
