Hristo Biserov, former deputy speaker of Bulgaria's Parliament, who has been charged with money laundering and document fraud, left Sofia investigative office on Friday without uttering a single word.
Given the heavy crimes he allegedly committed, his silence is more than gold. But this made reporters go into hysterics and media flooded us with speculations about Biserov's connections and the flow of the money he is believed to have laundered.
Truth is, this is what Bulgarian politicians know best when they find themselves in hot waters – they just keep their silence. This is exactly what Bulgaria's communist dictator Todor Zhivkov used to preach. Keep your head down until the storm is over – this was one of his tactics.
We see similar tactics at play nowadays. The guilty and corrupt ones keep a low profile until the storm is over only to go on a spending spree afterward as free men!
It is a shame for any politician to become implicated in such wrongdoings, because it shows lack of moral values. It is a shame to keep your silence when you owe voters answers. It is a shame to secretly hope that your wrongdoings will somehow go unnoticed by Bulgaria's EU partners.
