The European Students' Union has sent a message backing the right to expression of Bulgarian students who have occupied lecture halls across the country, most notably the main building of Sofia University.

The ESU statement stresses on students' right to voice their views on political matters fundamental to life in their country.

"Getting rid of corruption is the way to prosperous economy and a healthy democracy. Students and young graduates are most affected by lack of stable employment and the brain drain ensuing from corruption. We support fully the cause of Bulgarian students to fight against corruption within Bulgaria’s administration," said Gabriela Bergan, Human Rights and Solidarity Coordinator of the European Students’ Union.

"Students have proven to be in the past a driving force for change and this is exactly the role that Bulgarian students are embracing now," added she.

In particular, ESU took issues with a statement by Bulgarian PM Plamen Oresharski, who had suggested that students should be making demands related to education, and not overtly political demands.

In their protest, occupiers at Sofia University have requested Oresharski's resignation and the dissolution of parliament.

"ESU would like to remind the Bulgarian government that it firmly stands for "the right of all students to freely express themselves and this should not be limited to academic matters" (as protected by art.14 of the Students' Rights Charter)," writes the organization.

The European Students' Union also speaks up against what it sees as excessive force used by the police during student rallies over the week.

The "Early Birds" group, who have occupied the main building of Sofia University, reacted by issuing a statement saying: "The European Students' Union, which unites student organizations from across Europe, fully supports the struggle of Bulgarian students."
