Recalled Bulgarian Ambassador to Brazil, Chavdar Nikolov, is to sue Bulgaria's foreign ministry for removing from office in what he has called a direct, personal attack.
Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry terminated last week the mission of its Ambassador to Brazil Chavdar Nikolov over the case with Olympic weightlifting champion Galabin Boevski.
Ambassador Nikolov was urgently summoned back to Bulgaria on October 25, for explanations about the release of Boevski from a Brazilian jail, where he was serving a 9 year and 4 month sentence for drug trafficking.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Nikolov had failed to notify them in time for the release of Boevski, as well as the motives behind it. There had also been a lack of communication on the issue between the Embassy in Brazil and the Foreign Ministry.
The former weightlifter, who was detained in Sao Paulo in 2011, was returned to Bulgaria 2 weeks ago, without any official details being released.
The former ambassador has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
"I spent ten days in Bulgaria. I was interrogated in details, but unfortunately none of the facts I cited was taken into account. That was a direct personal attack, which aimed solely at my recall. But I did expect it,“ Nikolov told bTV private channel on Tuesday morning, speaking from South America.
The former diplomat reiterated that he has acted by the book.
"It is only natural that if the foreign ministry knows nothing, the embassy knows nothing either. We were not aware that Mr. Boevski will be expelled from the country in this way.
We assumed that such a procedure may be triggered, but usually it takes about six months. In the case of Mr. Boevski the procedure was wrapped up for 3.5 hours.”
