Landmark Trial Begins: Former US President Trump Faces Criminal Charges
The first criminal trial against a former US president commences in a New York courtroom
Bulgaria's President Rosen Plevneliev warned that the attempts for inciting hatred to gain political dividends is highly risky for the country.
Plevneliev hosted a meeting with his predecessors of the Bulgarian transition, as well as all Chairs of Parliament over the past 24 years, to mark the anniversary of the fall of communism. Former presidents Zhelyu Zhelev and Georgi Parvanov were unable to attend.
The President called for a tolerant and adequate response to the refugee crisis, and condemned the use of violence and populist xenophobic rhetoric. Bulgaria has been marred by a recent increase in anti-immigrant sentiments, as well as some horrific incidents against foreigners.
Plevneliev pointed out the justice system as the main area which needs focus. He stressed that this is the main concern of the public as well, and the protests are clearly reflecting it.
The President did not rule out the possibility of amending the Constitution, if this will be necessary to achieve a more democratic society.
