Investigative Journalist Christo Grozev Afraid to Return to Bulgaria
Renowned investigative journalist Christo Grozev faces a chilling reality as warnings from US and European intelligence services deter his potential return to Bulgaria
The Prosecution should probe politicians and media who incite hatred, says the Deputy Head of the Bulgaria for Citizens Movement.
Yonko Grozev from Bulgaria for Citizens called for the Prosecution to have the will to investigate Parliament members for hate speech and incitement of hatred.
"Playing around with xenophobia is playing with fire. Our society must wake up to the risks behind using hate speech. When this is used by political leaders, it is obvious that they are trying to earn quick dividends on populist grounds", said Grozev for the Bulgarian National Radio.
In Grozev's view, Bulgarians underestimate the severity of the issue, since the country does not have extensive experience in dealing with refugees, but must take example from other countries, where hate speech is taken seriously.
On Monday, the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office initiated pretrial proceedings for incitement of hatred, against municipal councilor Angel Dzhambazki, vice-chair of the nationalist VMRO party.
Dzhambazki organized a mass anti-immigrant rally in Sofia on Sunday, in connection with the stabbing of a young Bulgarian store clerk by an Algerian national.
