Maxim Makarichev: Moscow is Coming back to Normal

Novinite Insider » INTERVIEW | October 27, 2002, Sunday // 00:00

Mr. Maxim Makarichev is special correspondent of Russian Governmental Journal "Rossiiskaya Gazeta".

Mr. Makarichev talked on the phone from Moscow with Milena Hristova, Editor of Novinite.com and The News

Q: Do you think the Russian media covers the events on Moscow siege objectively? There were reports that the Russian authorities stand in the way of the objective covering of the events?

A: Absolutely not. In fact foreign journalists did a great job in showing the true image of terrorists. People know terrorists by the images they are presented with. There are no good and bad terrorists, but only terrorists. People all over the world see that image and this is the way they are described by the information agencies.

Q: So you approve of the operation?

A: Yes and this is also the opinion of our journalists and the Russian people. The terrorists were very cruel. This is proved by the reactions of the leaders of different countries that we receive at the information agencies.

Q: The number of the victims among the hostages is rising. Do you think that could lead to escalation of the tension in Moscow?

A: Victims account for about ten percent of the people in the operation, but the menace was real to all the people. Imagine only the hundreds of children and women that were in the Moscow Theater!

Q: What is the atmosphere in Moscow?

A: The atmosphere in Russia is coming back to normal, because the operation of the Russian forces was very professional and large-scale operation. It is all very quite again.

Q: Is everyday life in Moscow changed by the fact that some rebels might have escaped?

A: No, nothing is changed.

Q: How will these events reflect on the ordinary people in Chechnya?

A: I am sure that in the future there will be no problems in the human relations between Russians, Chechens, Georgians. Terrorists are the only problem and menace.
