Bulgaria's government has adopted a strategy on reducing the share of school droputs.
The strategy, which aims to downsize the share of school dropouts from 12.5% in 2012 to 11% through a set of measures, is to be in force by 2020, according to the BGNES news agency.
The issue of school dropouts is a serious social and economic problem.
The failure of students to earn diplomas reduces their chances of being successful in life and on the labor market.
In the case of people with primary education or even less, the risk of social exclusion grows.
Last but not least, this creates preconditions for deterioration in the quality of life and well-being of the current generation and the generations to come.
The goals of the strategy are to be achieved through key preventive measures aimed at eliminating the reasons for dropping out, creating conditions for curbing the share of dropouts, and providing compensations so as to help dropouts return to school and acquire qualifications.
The strategy requires an inter-sectoral approach on a national, municipal and school level, guaranteed by a coordination mechanism between institutions.
The strategy also envisages the participation of the non-governmental sector in the development and implementation of specific educational policies and in the improvement of the material, technical, social, psychological and pedagogical conditions, including through opportunities for public-private partnership.
